PRE-AMPS, CONVERTORS & CONTROL SURFACE - THE MODULAR MIXING CONSOLE

By investing purely in the essential component parts for 'in the box' recording, we've been able to achieve audio quality comparable to mega-consoles without making the studio unaffordable - why pay for outboard EQ, compression and aux sends when you're not using them? Our Focusrite Liquid 4Pre and 5x ISA-428s give 24 channels of ultra-clean mic and instrument preamps, while the Apogee AD16X and Rosetta 800 provide superb sounding AD/DA conversion and I/O, and Digidesign's excellent 24-fader C|24 control surface gives hands-on control of virtually all Pro Tools parameters.

FOCUSRITE LIQUID 4PRE

Focusrite's revolutionary Liquid technology is behind the world's only convolution mic pre-amp - modelling technology is used to apply the charecteristics of any number of classic high-end pre-amps to the signal in real-time. Crucially though, the analogue input stages are also varied to mimic the effects the original pre-amps had on the microphone back down the line. In blind tests, listeners have not reliably been able to tell the difference between the Liquid model and the original hardware. The Liquid 4Pre offers 4 mic and 4 line inputs which can also be switched to accept instrument level signals, and a software front-end is provided which offers easy control of all parameters via Ethernet.

FOCUSRITE ISA 428

Focusrite's ISA pre-amps are based on the original circuits found in the extremely rare Rupert Neve designed Focusrite Forte mixing desks - possibly the finest consoles ever made. Modern components and manufacturing techniques have been taken advantage of to further improve the design, offering incredibly low noise, crystal-clear sound and the ability to handle a huge range of signals. The addition of separate inputs for line and instrument level signals, large peak meters and variable impedance make these extremely versatile pre-amps.

SUMMIT TLA-50

Even the most ‘nu-skool’ of producers tell us there’s one thing they still like to use analogue compression for – tracking vocals. The Summit TLA-50 is a tube levelling amplifier based on their classic TLA-100 design which has the simplest of control sets but the smoothest of sound – perfect for vocals, and also a great companion for the TD-100 tube DI box when recording bass.

Summit TD-100

Although our Focusrite pre-amps have extremely clean DI inputs, bassists around the world seem to love the sound of this Summit tube direct box, which also features continuously variable impedance to allow you to ‘dial in’ the exact sound you’re looking for. Not bad on other instruments either.

APOGEE ROSETTA 800 & AD16X

Rather than make the easy decsion to use Digidesign's regular convertors, we listened to a number of high-end convertors and selected the best, as quality is so critical at this stage. After extensive testing we chose Apogee's AD16X and Rosetta 800, which we feel offer stunning realism, along with handy features such as direct interfacing with Pro Tools via X-HD cards, and Apogee's excellent soft limiting which can save takes that would otherwise have gone into the red. The system provides 24 simultaneous analogue inputs and 8 outputs operating at 24-bit and up to 192kHz, along with a further 16 digital ins and outs, 8 of which are used to drive our Hear Tech multi-channel foldback system.

DIGIDESIGN C|24

The one disadvantage of working 'in the box' is the cramped and un-inspiring working style of controlling everything via the mouse and keyboard. Digidesign's C|24 control surface provides hands-on control of recording, editing and mixing with 24 touch-sensitive motorised faders, 24 continuous encoders with LED rings, dual-row LED scribble strips and a host of other knobs and buttons for mute/solo, automation modes, transport controls, jog/shuttle, plug-in control and much more. Additionally, the C|24 incorporates a fully featured calibrated monitor controller with talkback/listenback and alternate source inputs - 'big console' functionality.

FRONTIER DESIGN TRANZPORT

At the other end of the size scale we have Frontier Design's Tranzport wireless remote, which offers transport control, track selection and more - this gives a more tactile interface at our MIDI station, and also allows performing engineer/producers to record themselves.
