MONITORING
One of the primary requirements of a good studio is to let you hear what's really going on - after auditioning many different systems, we installed a fully active soffit mounted 4-way setup comprising 2x Quested VS3208 and 2x Quested VS1112 subwoofers, calibrated to Bob Katz's K-System. It provides hours of detailed yet non-fatiguing listening. We also have 3 pairs of nearfields, and top-quality open-back headphones.

QUESTED VS3208 & VS1112
Roger Quested is renowned around the world for the custom monitors he has designed since the 70s for mega-studios like Abbey Road, The Townhouse and many more. He pioneered the use of soft-dome midrange drivers which brings an incredible clarity to his products, particularly in the crucial vocal range. Our 3-way active VS3208s are complimented by dual VS1112 subwoofers to give a true 4-way active stereo system with phenomenal accuracy all the way down to around 35Hz - a combination favoured by many mastering engineers. Soffit mounting the monitors brings a number of acoustic benefits including much more accurate bass response, and decoupling from the fabric of the control room.

FOCAL SOLO 6BE
Focal Solos are rapidly becoming the new high-end standard in nearfield monitoring, thanks to their amazing clarity - which comes courtesy of their inverted beryllium tweeters - and incredible bass extension for a compact speaker (-2dB @ 40Hz).

YAMAHA NS10M
The Marmite of speakers - some swear by NS10Ms as the ultimate mix tool, while others would rather sell their own granny than use them. We're sitting on the fence (chickens!), but there's no doubt that it's useful to have a reference point that's common to the large majority of commercial studios.

OMNIPHONICS S100
Delivering 100W per channel into 8 Ohms, the Omniphonics S100 makes an excellent partner for the NS10Ms - great clean sound and loads of headroom.

AVANTONE MIXCUBE ACTIVE
Although we'd prefer it if everyone listened to our music on fantastic sound systems, the reality is that the typical home or car system leaves rather a lot to be desired. For this reason it's often helpful to check mixes on 'grotbox' speakers - these Avantones are the modern incarnation of the classic Auratone design found in studios the world over, offering all their 'grotty' qualities in an active design with considerably more volume.

BOB KATZ K-SYSTEM
Our monitoring is calibrated to Bob Katz's K-System, and we use the Roger Nichols Digital 'Inspector XL' plug-in for metering in this environment. This is a method of maintaining a constant reference monitoring level, in combination with varying degrees of headroom between average and peak levels for different types of music (e.g. classical music has a lot of headroom and dance music has very litle). The result is substantially more dynamic mixes that sound 'right' at typical listening levels, and happier mastering engineers :-)

SENnHEISER HD650
These open-backed headphones are Sennheiser's flagship model, and offer an extrmely detailed sound, along with great comfort for hours of unfatiguing listening.

PRESONUS CENTRAL STATION
The passive design of this monitoring controller has virtually no impact on sound quality. Although switching between main monitors and nearfields is done at the C|24 control surface, we use the Central Station to calibrate and switch between our various nearfield monitors, and also to provide two extra headphone outputs.
